One of the best things about living on Oahu is the opportunity to enjoy the vast beauty, recreational, and cultural activities of Hawaii, all within a very short distance from home. While most people living on Oahu still have the day-to-day activites of work, school, kids activities, and other obligations, many are fortunate to take the time a few times a year, or even more frequently, for a Hawaii staycation.
A staycation in Hawaii can involve staying in a luxury resort (and there are many to choose from), or even taking a lower-budget, but still picturesque and amazing camping trip, or anything in-between.
The great thing about hotel staycations is that Hawaii residents are eligible for the “Kama’aina Discount.” Just show your Hawaii Driver’s License, Hawaii Resident ID, or even Military ID and you will be eligible for sometimes HUGE, but usually signiificant, discounts on luxury hotels and resorts and other tourist attractions that will be fun on your Hawaii staycation.
People in Kailua often take Waikiki or North Shore staycations and vice versa. Last year, my son and I took a staycation to the Leeward side of the island and stayed at the new Disney Aulani Hotel. Oahu residents also take staycations to places on Maui, Kauai, Lanai and the other neighbor islands. The airplane trip is less than an hour.
Here are some photos from our recent staycation, celebrating my husband’s return after a year in Afghanistan, on the Island of Kauai. It is awesome to be able to live on Oahu and take a 25 minute flight for a fantastic vacation!
Oh, how I love staycations!!
