President Obama Arrives on Oahu to Spend Christmas with His Family
Last night President Obama and his family arrived on Oahu for the start to their Christmas holiday. As is traditonal for them, they are staying in the beautiful and picturesque beach town of Kailua, Oahu, where I also live. The President’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng and other family members live on Oahu, and the President was born in Honolulu.
I fully understand why President Obama would choose to come to Kailua for his much needed R&R. Kailua has a wonderful small-town feel, beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters. If the ocean here was not a lovely enough reason to visit, the backdrop is the massive Koolau Mountain Range, with its own impressive beauty will draw you in.
The people here in Kailua are what really set Kailua apart. There is a small town friendliness and, of course, the Aloha spirit that you find all over the State of Hawaii. Neighbors here really care and look out for each other. It is a place where Random Acts of Kindness occur more frequently thank you would think. For example, just recently, an anonymous Santa Claus took it upon him or herself to decorate 32 Kailua mailboxes for Christmas in one Kailua neighborhood. See full article. And, unbelieveably, last night when I was out to dinner in Kailua with friends and all our kids (at a not so inexpensive restaurant) a random stranger anonymously picked up our entire dinner tab and tip, for no reason at all, just in the holiday spirit!
We are hoping to see President Obama and his family around Kailua Town when they are here. He usually can be spotted at least once during his trip at the local Shave Ice Place near Kailua Beach. Also, often he frequents the Mid-Pac Country Club, for a round of golf, and the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base Hawaii, for his workouts.
President Obama stays in the Beachside neighborhood of Kailua, Oahu. This is a great neighborhood in Kailua (about 15 miles from Honolulu) with several hundred homes, many of them beachfront Kailua homes, some of them Kailua beach cottages, some of them Kailua luxury estates. The Beachside, Kailua neighborhood spans across about 2 miles of Kailua Beach. The President, many years ago, stayed in a Kailua beachfront home located on North Kalaheo Avenue. Recently, however, he has favored a three home compound in the Castle Point Area of the Beachside neighborhood at Kailuana Place.
I have been in both of these beachfront Kailua homes, as they have both been for sale at one time or another over the past several years, and they are beautiful. I’ve written past blog posts about both of them. The Kailua estate at North Kalaheo, which is akin to a hotel, is currently for sale for $10,000,000 if you are interested in a expansive beachfront Kailua estate.
