Hawaiian Interior Design | Philpotts Interiors
Philpotts Interiors is perhaps the most prolific interior design house in the Hawaiian Islands and one of the Top 200 Interior Design Industry Giants in the United States, as named by Interior Design Magazine. The firm was started in the 1960’s by Marion Philpotts McGrath and she was later joined by Marion Philpotts Miller and Jonathan Staub, who founded the design company, Your Space, Inc., in San Francisco. Other designers at Philpotts Interiors include Lowell Tom, Holly Boling Ruiz, Kristie Kiggins, Anne Tanaka, Lynn Ariola, and Dawn Ching.
In their words:
“Their focus at both locations has been to infuse a fresh, modern energy into the design work, and to look beyond the islands to the mainland U.S., Asia and the Pacific for their projects.”
“Creating a home that represents the owner’s needs, wants and aesthetics has always been the driving design philosophy at Philpotts Interiors. Weaving cultural and environmental integrity into the exterior and interior physical spaces provides core values that guide the owner and designer. This approach is paramount to the successful creation of award winning homes—the hallmark of our business.”
Many an Oahu luxury home has been designed by this talented firm. Philpotts Interiors also handles larger commercial projects, such as spas, hotels, and condominium buildings. Examples of their beautiful work can be seen on Oahu, Maui, Big Island, Lanai, and Kauai and in California, as well. Projects can go beyond those areas, however, where there is a desire for tropical or “East meets West” interior design.
The above two photos were featured in the book “Hawaii: A Sense of Place, Island Interior Design” by Mary Philpotts McGrath & Kaui Philpotts, with David Duncan Livingston’s stunning photography. This publication is full of beautiful examples of tropical Hawaiian interior design.

One of their biggest projects of late was the redesign of the historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. This was a $100 million renovation and, more importantly, preservation of the iconic “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” so every detail here was painstakingly examined and refined.
