Hawaii Life | Fresh Local Fish on Oahu by Local I'a

You may think it is easy to get good fresh fish on Oahu. After all, we live on an island, surrounded by the ocean for thousands of miles in every direction with, presumably, plenty of fish. However, it seems that most local grocery stores do not get great fish and often, the fish there is not local. We’ve been really disappointed at the fish available at our local grocery stores. Most of the best local fish is sold directly to restaurants by the fisherman at auction.

So what is a fish lover to do when the “best” fish readily available on Oahu is found at Costco and imported from the mainland? Try Local I’a.  Friends just turned me on to this great source for fresh local fresh on Oahu. And it’s awesome!

What is Local ‘Ia?

Local I‘a is distribution and subscription based seafood business. They source local, in-season seafood that is caught through pono fishing practices and distributed directly to chefs and consumers. Local I’a was established to increase the awareness of where seafood comes from, highlight our hard working pono fishers, and provide healthy local seafood.

These matters are of utmost importance and are some of the primary issues that commonly make or break an Oahu real estate transaction. But what are the obligations and requirements for Seller’s disclosures and Buyer’s due diligence regarding the sale of real estate in Hawaii? SONY OPEN IN HAWAII - Oahu PGA Golf Tournament

The Sony Open in Hawaii is here again!

One of the most popular golf tournaments to occur annually on Oahu, the Sony Open, starts this coming week, January 11-14. Held at the Waialae Country Club in Kahala, every year, the Hawaii Sony Open PGA Golf Tournament is one to not miss. Tee times can be found on the Sony Open Website

The Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour.  Currently, the Open is held in mid-January, following the Tournament of Champions on Maui. The front and back nines of Waialae are switched for the PGA Tour event, finishing at the dogleg ninth hole. The tournament is currently organized by Friends of Hawaii Charities.  In addition to the usual PGA Tour eligibility criteria, the Sony Open may invite up to three professional golfers from emerging markets.

Oahu Real Estate | Is Your Oahu Home Hurricane Safe?

HURRICANE SAFETY FOR OAHU HOMES

Oahu hurricane safety is at top of mind now, especially as we are in the midst of hurricane season, here, in Hawaii, and given the hurricane disasters we are witnessing in Houston, Florida, and the rest of the Southeast mainland. Today is also exactly 25 years from the date that Hurricane Iniki devasted the island of Kauai.

It is not as scary as it sounds: “only three hurricanes have made landfall in the past 60 years: Hurricane Iniki (1992), Hurricane Iwa (1982), and Hurricane Dot (1959).  Recently, Tropical Storm Iselle (2014) did make landfall on the Big Island, but had been downgraded to a tropical storm before impacting,” This storm was still very costly, in terms of damage and despair to Hawaii residents. “Hurricane Iniki (a Category 4 hurricane) has remained to date the largest hurricane and natural disaster that has struck the Hawaiian Islands.”* 

Hurricanes are typically a risk during the hurricane season - June 1 until November 30 - and more so in El Nino years. However, in Hawaii, we normally experience storms of lesser degrees —- tropical storms and tropical depressions —- not hurricanes, where the wind strength increases substantially. A very serious hurricane is still possible, without much warning, so hurricane safety on Oahu and tropical storm safety, in general, should always be taken seriously.

Ka Malanai - New Condos in Kailua - Buildings 7 and 8

Today, I visited Ka Malanai with a client who put down a deposit for a new condomimum home in Kailua. Yay! Home Shoppe Hawaii is proud to say we have assisted many buyers with their purchase in this new Kailua condominium development. Ka Malanai is the first new condo building in Kailua in over 20 years. Ka Malanai is also on the VA list (VA financing is approved). The floor plans of these new Kailua condominiums are great and there are 1, 2 and 3 bedroom models from which to choose. The prices for 1 BR at Ka Malanai start in the low 600’s. 3 BR are in the upper 800 and 900’s, which is less than the median price of a single-family home in Kailua.

All Ka Malanai units feature beautiful finishes and upgrades, central air conditioning, and are single-level, with elevators in each building. No other Kailua condominium offers these features. 2 and 3 BR units also offer two deeded parking spaces. Kitchens and bathrooms are spacious and beautiful. The hallways are wide. These new Kailua condos feel more like a single-family home than a condominium. The Kailua location also cannot be beat, just a short distance from Kailua Beach and in the center of Kailua Town. They are over 75% owner-occupied, but also make a great investment.
